Anyone who knows me on a personal level knows that I am a fan of politics. In fact, one day I plan to become active in the political process by being elected to public office. I mean my B.A. is in Political Science!! So basically I keep my ears and eyes to all things politic. Therefore, you can imagine how saddened I am by the lost of an American hero and one of the greatest political figures in the history of the United States Ted Kennedy. His had a way of commanding a room and a stage unlike any I have ever seen. His fierce determination set him apart from his contemporaries and made him well liked on both sides of the aisle. We would not be the country that we are today without the staunch diligence and efforts of Ted Kennedy. He will be greatly missed. Your legacy will live on
R.I.P. Aaliyah
•August 26, 2009 • Leave a CommentSo Yesterday August 25th marked the 8th anniversary of the death of R&B singer Aaliyah. She had 3 platinum albums and made classic hits such as “One in A Million”, “4-page letter” and “Rock the Boat” to name a few. I still remember when i heard about her passing. I honestly felt like crying. Not only was I a fan of her music but I was a fan of her personality. She was a great artist and she will forever be remembered as such. Therefore, I felt it was only right to include two my most favorite songs by her. “I Miss You” and “Rock the Boat”. Enjoy!

•August 25, 2009 • Leave a CommentBeing a writer/poet in today’s world I am greatly intrigued by any work of art that is inherently creative as well as awe inspiring. This piece by Slam Nuba at the 2009 National Poetry Slam symbolizes the essence of what it means to be a poet, writer, educator, activist, etc. This piece doesn’t just “go in”…. It goes “inside out”. You’ll see… Enjoy

Man or Woman..... What do you think???
So earlier this week allegations surfaced accusing South Africa’s female track sensation and world champion Caster Semenya of actually being a MAN!! Thats right!! The International Association of Athletes Federation(IAAF) requested that the 18-year old track phenom undergo “tests” to determine her true gender. The IAAF cited her muscular build, deep voice and rapid change in 800-meter times as cause for the tests.
Now this is how i feel……
I do admit that her picture makes her appear somewhat muscular and manly, however, there’s nothing irregular or unusual about female track athletes having that type of physique or appearance. I think its rather insulting that she has to undergo these test just to prove her gender. Especially because the accusations are all based off of appearance rather than genetic suspicions or information about gender change procedures. I know that I would be quite upset if anyone questioned me being a man so i can imagine how she feels… And what makes it worse is that its all over the internet and news media, plus she is still competing as the tests are being taken and the results wont be in until several weeks from now.
I believe that this incident shows society’s preoccupation with what we feel should like and act like. It shows that we are still very much biased and narcissistic when it comes to appearance. If she is in fact a man, then punishment should be in order, however, I think that the very idea of testing a person’s gender is insulting and degrading.
If Semenya is actually a woman, then i hate it for her family and especially her BOYFRIEND!!. Can you imagine dating a girl that people thinks is a man.. that must be humbling and embarassing. I feel sorry for ya….
